Delaware Valley highlights Special Olympics, Unified Sports and first-year Polar Plunge fundraising

Delaware Valley School District honored Special Olympics athletes and Unified Sports participants during a work-session presentation, and students and advisors described expanded programming and first-year fundraising through a Polar Plunge.

Head advisor Mrs. Saturno introduced student participants from the district—s Special Olympics and unified teams and recounted the school—s first-year bocce program, Unified track success, and a Polar Plunge fundraiser. "This year's seniors showed up," Saturno said, describing student leadership that helped launch bocce and other activities. Students said the school raised about $3,000 at the Polar Plunge, the highest amount raised by a single school participating in the event that year.

Students described the Polar Plunge experience and how the event boosted volunteer numbers and participation in Special Olympics programs. One student said, "It was such an incredible opportunity," and coaches and advisors described growth in unified track, bocce, bowling and skiing: staff reported 84 bowling participants across middle- and high-school levels and 67 skiers during the season. Students also said unified track captains and athletes helped build relationships across grades; one student noted an undefeated season in the 100-meter dash.

Advisors said the district plans to expand unified programs to middle and elementary schools next year and is exploring options to bring bocce to younger students. The presentation also included references to statewide Polar Plunge totals: staff said the statewide fundraiser raised about $6,000,000 this year. Board members and administrators praised student leadership and inclusion and thanked volunteers and National Honor Society participants for supporting activities such as skiing lifts.

No board action was required; the presentation served as recognition and a program update.
