Mayor Craig Ford said Gadsden City has installed two “lib cabinets,” vending-machine-style kiosks that allow library patrons to check out books and DVDs with a library card, as part of the city’s effort to expand access to library materials.
“One's at Carver Community Center, and one is at the East Gadsden Community Center,” Ford said. He described the cabinets as designed to serve residents who use library services in different formats, noting that some patrons borrow audiobooks or digital materials while others still use physical books and DVDs.
Ford said patrons must use a library card at the lib cabinet to check out materials and can return items to any location that accepts library returns; he said the downtown Gadsden library remains open and continues to provide regular services, and he credited Craig Scott and library staff for services to children and other patrons.
The mayor did not specify how the cabinets were funded or the number of items stocked in each unit.
