A San Marcos resident urged the board on June 12 to take a public stance against a proposed detox and rehabilitation facility he said would be sited near several San Marcos schools.
Dennis Nosco told trustees that when the public recently learned a grant application sought funding for a detox facility on a Methodist Church‑owned site near San Marcos Middle School, parents objected because the site is adjacent to a Montessori school, a large Paloma Elementary School bus stop, and athletic fields used daily. Nosco said about 1,600 people signed an online petition opposing the location and that Interfaith Community Services — which submitted the grant application — plans to resubmit the proposal.
“While I know you can't stop this facility from being built due to California laws, I ask that you work with Interfaith, the Methodist Church, and the city of San Marcos to find a more appropriate location,” Nosco told the board. He requested the district press for safety elements in the facility and to be transparent and solicit public feedback ahead of the next grant submission, which he said had an early October deadline.
Board members did not take action during the June 12 meeting on the request; the comment was taken during the public‑comment portion of the agenda. Nosco said he and other parents support the need for detox and treatment services but believe the particular proposed location is unsuitable because of its proximity to students and several school sites.
