Parent urges district to move expectant-mothers classroom at Capital High, requests transportation details

A parent told the Kanawha County Board of Education on June 12 that the classroom assigned for the expectant-mothers program at Capital High School does not meet students' needs and requested the district move the class to a different room.
Amanda Hager said the classroom assigned by Dr. Uhlenbacher and Mr. Bailey is 409C, which she described as windowless, not in the same hallway as the daycare and lacking nearby bathroom and pumping space. "Please don't put these students into a windowless classroom all day that's not close in proximity to either the day care or the bathroom," Hager said. She proposed classroom 344 (noted in the record as 343C/344) because it connects to the daycare through an adjoining room, has a single bathroom and a small private space for pumping, and includes a window into the daycare.
Hager also said she had received an email indicating the district is creating a contract with an outside transportation company for a van service to bring students to and from Capital High School because no bus route currently serves those students. She thanked the district for arranging transportation and asked the district to provide the name of the contractor and the contact who will handle the service after Dr. Uhlenbacher's departure.
The board did not take action on the delegation during the meeting. Hager requested professionalism and that discussion remain focused on student needs rather than personal attacks.
