Board approves superintendent consent agenda including more than $1 million in special-education contracts

At its June 11 meeting the Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education approved the superintendent’s consent agenda, which included multiple out-of-district special-education placements and related-services contracts.
Superintendent Dr. Celico told the board the forthcoming agreements represent a substantial investment in students with disabilities — "over a million dollars," she said — noting that contracts cover services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech. Dr. Celico said some students require placements outside district buildings because of the severity of their disabilities and that the district is working to monitor placements and return students to the least-restrictive setting when appropriate.
Board members acknowledged the financial pressure such contracts create, and the superintendent said federal funding for special education is limited and does not cover the full cost. At roll call the board approved the superintendent’s consent agenda by voice/roll call vote; members voted "aye."
