Resident concerns prompt Hampton Township council to review Wildwood and Middle Road intersection safety
Summary
A resident asked the council to consider a four-way stop at the Wildwood and Middle Road (Middle Road Extension) intersection; council members cited a Trans Associates study that warned of queuing and delay effects from stop control and discussed short-term measures such as additional signage or a trial of temporary stop signs.

A Hampton Township constituent raised safety concerns about the intersection of Wildwood and Middle Road (Middle Road Extension), and council members discussed study findings and possible short-term measures.
The council said the resident requested a four-way stop at the intersection. "She obviously wants to see a 4 way stop at that intersection," said Ryan, township administration staff, summarizing the constituents request and the townships communications with the resident.
Ryan and other council members referenced an updated Trans Associates study done last year that assessed the intersection and modeled the effects of stop control. Ryan said the study showed that installing stop controls on Middle Road would create delays and queuing that could worsen safety on Bridal Road because of backups and sight-line issues. "If you would do 2 stop signs on middle Road... it shows the impact of what that would be in terms of of delays on middle road and queuing," Ryan said.
Council members discussed short-term actions they could pursue while larger engineering changes would be years away and potentially tied to the Route 8 project. Suggestions included clearer pavement markings, additional signage (for example, signing that "cross traffic does not stop"), and a trial use of temporary stop signs to observe traffic impacts before any permanent change. Council members also noted that Middle Road is a county road and that county representatives may need to be involved in any physical changes.
Council encouraged the resident to bring her concerns to a future meeting for the record and said staff would continue to explore potential "quick wins" such as signage or a temporary trial before pursuing major redesigns.
