Haslet park board orders flags for veterans garden, discusses VFW partnership and Christmas activities

The Haslet Parks and Recreation Board voted to purchase replacement flags for the Veterans Memorial Garden and discussed expanding cooperation with the local VFW on seasonal events.

Board members voted to buy 12 flags (the board recorded the motion and a vote in favor during the meeting). The flags were priced in the packet at about $25.49 each; the board asked staff to use city signs funding for the replacements and to arrange for poles to be fitted with new hardware.

Members also discussed building a formal partnership with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Chuck and other members reported a recent meeting with VFW leadership; the post expressed interest in greater visibility and participation at city events, including collecting Toys for Tots during the Christmas in the Park program. The board reviewed its bylaws language on special committees and agreed it could appoint a special committee to formalize a working partnership that would allow non-board members to participate in planning and volunteering.

On the Christmas agenda, members voted to hire a smaller “barnyard” petting zoo for the event and decided to remove T-shirt guarantees from the sponsor form to avoid being obligated to purchase surplus shirts. Board members also discussed vendor lists and food-ticket approaches for staff meals at events.

Katrina, the staff member, will follow up on flag orders, confirm whether city signs funds are appropriate, and coordinate with the finance director and the mayor. Chuck said he would continue discussions with the VFW and report back at a future meeting.
