Syosset details multi-year school construction plan; major work to begin next summer

Syosset Central School District officials on Wednesday outlined a multi-year construction schedule that will begin with site and paving work this summer and move to larger renovations and new construction beginning next summer.
Dr. Rogers told the Board of Education that this summer residents will see site work at Southwoods, temporary parking-lot closures, paving at Syosset High School, a bus loop installation at South Grove and roofing and masonry work at several sites. "So there are a handful of projects that will be taking place this summer. So the things that will be most noticeable here at Southwoods, you'll see a lot of site work. The parking lot is going to be inaccessible for a number of weeks," he said.
The nut graf: District leaders said design work is underway and must be submitted to the State Education Department for approval; once designs are approved the district will go out to bid and then to contract before construction starts. Officials said staging multiple turf and field projects together will lower costs.
Dr. Rogers said major construction gets under way next summer, with projects that include air-conditioning upgrades in multiple gyms, locker-room refurbishments at the middle schools, a new high-school gym and bus loop, science-research laboratory work, turf installations and guidance-office reconfiguration. He told the board that classroom additions are planned at Walt Whitman and Berryhill, and a new gym is planned at Bayles; Village and Bayless projects were also listed.
He outlined the stepwise process: design work, submission to the State Education Department, bidding, contracting and then scheduling construction. "There's a lot of steps in the process, but, there is a lot of work going on. It's gonna be very exciting, for the community," Dr. Rogers said.
The superintendent estimated the largest projects will continue through the summer of 2027 and that not all work will be complete until into the summer of 2028. The district said it will publish a web tool to allow the public to track project stages once design work is complete.
Ending: Board members had no additional questions during the meeting; the district said it will provide community messaging about temporary disruptions, including parking access at Southwoods, and will report milestones to the board as state approvals and bids conclude.
