The RSU 22 school board unanimously authorized Superintendent Nick Lyons to hire educators directly from July 17 through the end of September to accommodate candidate notice periods and speed placement of new staff.
Lyons said the extension of hiring authority mirrors a prior practice that allowed district staff to onboard candidates who must provide 30 to 60 days'notice to their current employers. Lyons told the board that without the authorization some candidates offered positions in July might have to delay resignations and miss the first-day requirement for new teachers.
Board member Ellen asked what would happen if the board later declined to renew an initial contract; Lyons replied that the board still retains its statutory authority when the hire comes back for year-to-year contract renewal and can choose not to continue a contract at that time. Lyons said the change gives new educators a better chance to start the year on time.
The motion was made and seconded; the vote was unanimous.
