Southside ISD honors attendance winners, disability partners, Special Olympics athletes and top students

Southside Independent School District used its May 28 board meeting to recognize student achievement and community partnerships. Presentations honored campuses that met attendance goals, outside agencies that assist students with disabilities, Special Olympics athletes and the district's top students.
Attendance staff reported three campuses met the district's 93% attendance goal for the year: Pierce Elementary, Heritage Elementary and Freedom Elementary. Attendance winners for the six-week period were recognized and each campus received an incentive to be announced later.
The special programs coordinator, Gary Hyatt, outlined partnerships that support students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including Alamo Area Council of Governments (ACOG) IDD Services, Texas Workforce Solutions and a one-year collaboration with Texas A&M University's Institute for Autism and Related Disorders. Hyatt noted the district maintains a memorandum of understanding with ACOG to help families with intake and prioritization on waiting lists.
The Believe It Foundation donated 12 adaptive bikes valued at about $25,000, and district staff highlighted the district's work-based learning/post-secondary transition partnerships with employers including H-E-B and Peter Piper Pizza. Special Olympics athletes were recognized for participation in regional competitions hosted in part by the district.
The Southside Education Foundation announced it had raised more than $65,000 to fund scholarships, teacher grants and recognitions; the foundation and district presented Chromebooks to the two top students from each campus and recognized district valedictorian and salutatorian.
Trustees and staff thanked partners and volunteers; these items were presented for recognition rather than action.
