The Roswell City Council voted on June 12 to open a public hearing and consider Ordinance 25-03, which would authorize the sale of 7.53 acres of a city-owned 30.29-acre parcel at Sunset and Monsdale to Amazon.com Services LLC.
City staff said the parcel has been vacant since 1988 and is appraised at $60,240 for the 7.53-acre portion proposed for sale. The proposed transaction is a purchase-and-sale contract that was reviewed by the city's legal committee and advanced to the full council for advertisement and public hearing.
An Amazon representative, identifying themselves as a senior economic development manager for the company’s Southwest U.S. region, told the council the site would host a small delivery facility about 11,800 square feet in size to support the company’s “last mile” network. The representative estimated the local investment at about $10 million and forecast roughly 70 total jobs at the location, including about 50 Amazon associates and about 20 delivery service partners and drivers. Amazon said the target opening is April 2026.
The representative described the company’s broader logistics footprint in New Mexico and said the Roswell site would improve delivery speed and reduce reliance on third‑party carriers in smaller markets. Officials described the selected parcel as conveniently located for routing and ZIP-code coverage and asked staff to continue working with Amazon on due diligence and permitting.
Councilors who spoke acknowledged the potential job creation and asked technical questions about site circulation, truck movements and coordination with city services. A council member asked whether the proposed facility model is similar to locations in Artesia and Carlsbad; Amazon’s presenter agreed the model is comparable.
The council then took a roll-call vote to advertise the ordinance for a public hearing. City staff will accept public comment at the advertised hearing before the council takes any final vote to authorize the sale or finalize the purchase-and-sale contract.
