Ocean Shores Library to host 29 July programs; new Discover Passes and Friends funding support summer schedule

Ocean Shores — Library staff told the Ocean Shores Library Board of Trustees that the library’s summer schedule will include 29 programs in July, a new teen planning committee, and a multi-part ice-cream-social and solstice open house that will include crafts, a VR demonstration and community giveaways funded by the Friends of the Library.
“ We have 29 library programs just in July. 29,” Keitha, the library director, told trustees, adding that calendars are updated online each Monday and that staff will share flyers and schedules with board members for community advocacy.
Staff and volunteers are organizing multiple events and children’s activities. Nick and Nico are handling technology and children’s programs, Michelle leads teen and readers-advisory work, and Hannah creates promotional materials. The teen group has renamed itself the Teen Planning Committee, or TPC, and will help plan summer events, suggest titles for purchases and run monthly teen programming.
Summer highlights the board heard include a July ice-cream social and solstice open house that will include a suncatcher craft and painted rocks, a shell-and-bead wind-chime craft for adults, VR demonstrations by Nick, children’s crafts by Nico, and regular hot-dog service. The big summer finale will include professional performers — a magician, a reptile presentation, a steel-drum performance and a comedian — and the library expects large attendance for those shows.
The library’s summer-reading program uses a “Level Up” theme. Children read by levels, log reading minutes, and earn small prizes from a “treasure chest.” There are also drawings sponsored by local businesses for larger prizes; staff said some schools are offering extra credit to students who reach 500 pages over the summer. Keitha described the kids’ program schedule: it “starts Friday, goes through Aug. 15, and then every Thursday from 2 to 3 starting on the 19th.”
New services and community support: Keitha told trustees the library now has two Discover Passes available for one-week checkout and encourages patrons to reserve them; the program is funded through the state library. She said, “We have 2 Discover Passes.” The board was also told the Friends of the Library provide most event funding and had 117 paid members as of the previous day; the Friends’ next book sale was scheduled for July 4–5.
The Ocean Shores Library Foundation reported it has added two members and that staff who attended the Washington Library Association conference in Tacoma returned with ideas for programs; the foundation is evaluating which items it could fund.
What this means for patrons: Trustees were asked to help spread word about programs and to serve as advocates in the community. Staff said most flyers and the monthly calendar will be sent to trustees so they can promote events.
