Mineola honors Mineola High softball team after Nassau County Class A title

The Village of Mineola Board of Trustees recognized the Mineola High School varsity softball team at Village Hall for winning the 2025 Nassau County Class A championship, with elected officials presenting certificates, medals and proclamations to players and coaches.

The presentation on behalf of the board, led by Mayor Paul Pereira, celebrated a season that included a 13-game losing streak followed by a playoff run culminating in a three-game county final and a 5-0 victory in the deciding game over the Seaford Vikings. The title is the program’s first Nassau County championship since 1998.

"We are so proud of your accomplishments," Mayor Paul Pereira said, recalling past Mineola teams and urging the players to return next year to defend the title. Deputy Mayor Jeanine Sartore and Trustees Donna Soloski, Paul Casado and Jeff Clark joined the mayor in congratulating the team and presenting tokens of appreciation.

Head coach Monique Wenck, introducing her roster, described the squad as a young but resilient group and recounted the playoff run: an 8-0 quarterfinal win over Wheatley, a three-game semifinal series won 2-1 (losing game 2, 9-7, but taking games 1 and 3), a 4-1 victory in one county final game, a walk-off single in a nine-inning game that produced a win, and a 5-0, one-hit clincher in the deciding game. "This is your new Class A 2025 Nassau County Champions," Wenck said. "It has been quite a year… We went on a 13 game losing streak. Insane."

Wenck listed the roster while onstage: ninth grader Daniella Porcelli; sophomores Haley Diaz, Gianna Roselegio, Haiva (Eva) Lopez, Autumn Malone, Sage Rowan and Cassidy Fitzgerald (the coach referred to the team as a 13-player roster); juniors Kira Viscovie, Amanda Baker and Juliana Plunkett; and seniors Juliana Speranza, Carrie Alvarenga and Kira Santaniello. Assistant coaches Bill De Janeiro and Priscilla Smith were also acknowledged.

Town Councilman Dennis Walsh and representatives from neighboring Wilson Park delivered proclamations and certificates; the meeting record includes a certificate read aloud from Mayor Paul Air Bar of Wilson Park. Athletic director Mr. McCann was also recognized by the trustees for his role with the program.

Officials handed out 23 proclamations and medals, and took a group photograph with players, coaches and elected officials. The trustees and coaching staff encouraged players to continue developing and noted expectations will rise for the program going forward.

The trustees closed the recognition by inviting attendees to remain for three scheduled public hearings later in the meeting.
