County emergency management to buy outreach and command trailer with Duke Energy Foundation grant

Monroe County Councilors on Tuesday approved a small grant-funded purchase that emergency management officials say will help with public outreach and coordination during disasters and community events.
Justin Baker of the Monroe County Emergency Management office told the council the department received a Duke Energy Foundation grant to help buy a multipurpose communications and command trailer. The council approved creation of a new account line and an additional appropriation of $5,500 in the capital category to accept and spend the grant funds.
Baker said the trailer will boost the departmentability to coordinate countywide responses and will be deployed for public-education efforts and events. He said the department has an MOU in draft with Indiana University's immersive management team for partnership use of the trailer; the MOU had been forwarded to county legal for review.
"It'll be, for public outreach, like, going to, like, some of the festivals and stuff in the area," Baker said when councilors asked how the trailer would be used. Councilors asked about planned uses and timing; Baker said it will be used for event safety coordination and disaster response staging.
With no public comment, the council held a roll-call vote and approved the new account and $5,500 appropriation unanimously.
The trailer purchase is grant-funded; no general fund dollars were requested by emergency management for this item, council staff said.
