Supervisors back exploring property-maintenance ordinance; residents call for stronger enforcement

The Board of Supervisors agreed to begin work on updating the county’s property-maintenance regulations after Supervisor Mark Fisher proposed a committee to reexamine ordinances on grass, trash and property conditions.
The proposal matters because residents told the board they see neglected properties that neighbors say reduce property values and harm community appearance; several residents volunteered to help draft revisions.
Fisher said the county’s current regulations are "ancient" and in need of revision to provide clearer enforcement tools. He asked that Economic Development and county staff, as well as county attorney assistance, be involved in forming a committee that would include citizens from each district. "We need to take a look at some of this county property and see what we can do ... to make some improvements to draw some people here," Fisher said.
During public comment, callers from Indian Creek Estates and East Fairway Drive spoke in favor of an enforcement program. Carol Cosby and Rick Saunders urged the board to adopt an approach that would improve property appearance and protect values. Sheldon Groner and George Christopheratos, neighbors in the same subdivision, said they support a county-level standard because many properties there are not covered by private covenants.
Board members asked for enforcement clarity and who would perform compliance work; Fisher said the committee will consider enforcement mechanisms and that county attorney input will be sought. Supervisor Fisher requested that representatives from each district be invited to serve if volunteers are available.
