Gadsden ISD schedules special meetings and sets timeline to fill District 4 board seat after June resignation

The Gadsden ISD board moved to fill the unexpired District 4 board seat after Board Member Andrew Morales’s resignation became effective June 5.

Superintendent Dempsey reviewed the policy and legal timeline for filling board vacancies, noting a 45-calendar-day window to appoint a replacement. The superintendent proposed a special meeting for candidate interviews and a backward-planned schedule for advertising the vacancy, collecting candidate information and conducting interviews. After discussion about board members’ availability around July travel and the July 4 holiday, the board agreed to a special meeting on Wednesday, July 2 at 4:00 p.m. to interview candidates; the board also approved a separate meeting on July 20 at 4:00 p.m. to make an appointment to fill the District 4 seat before the 45-day deadline.

The superintendent explained the administrative steps: post a public notice and a Google-form application with basic eligibility questions, allow roughly ten days for applicants to respond, provide candidate packets to board members several days before the special meeting, and hold interviews and an appointment in open session. Board members discussed availability and staffing support for webcasting; the superintendent said staff would post and livestream the special meeting where feasible.

Board President Murillo read aloud Morales’s resignation letter; the body thanked Morales for service. The board voted to schedule the meetings and set the administrative timeline in open session.
