SolTrans completes $971,000 Sereno Transit Center beautification funded by Caltrans Clean California grant

SolTrans staff reported the completion of the Sereno Transit Center beautification project in June 2025, a construction and streetscape upgrade funded by a Clean California grant from Caltrans.

Staff said SolTrans received a Clean California grant of $971,000 in 2023 and began construction in January 2024. Project elements delivered by June 2025 include new bus shelters with seating at every bay, enhanced overhead and pathway lighting, upgraded landscaping with native and drought‑tolerant plants and a rain garden, dual trash and recycling receptacles, anti‑graffiti shields, and a new shaded play/hopscotch area.

The project also included a community art program. Staff worked with local artist Melissa Penny (Malice B) and assistants (The Hive) to create murals depicting local transit riders; planters are painted in memory of staff who served the agency; and a memorial bench and butterfly‑shaped shade structure were installed honoring a long‑serving operator. Street Teams Enterprises cleared debris from adjacent railroad tracks and UC Davis’s Plants in the City class contributed to landscaping efforts.

Staff credited general services analyst Angela Jackson with project management; Jackson was not present at the meeting. Staff said the upgrades improve safety, accessibility, shade and rider comfort and will make the transit center more inviting during early morning and evening hours.
