District food services announces summer feeding program, director approved to attend state nutrition conference
Summary

Prosser School District food services director Darlene told the board on June 11 that the district will operate a summer feeding program starting June 16 at Heights. The program is open to the public and serves children 18 and younger; breakfast and lunch will be available Monday through Thursday, with a break June 30–July 4 and summer-school service resuming July 7.
Darlene said the district is partnering with WSU SNAP to pilot a container garden featuring cherry tomatoes and leaf lettuce and with the Reading Foundation in the Tri-Cities; on July 8 the foundation will bring a large assortment of books for students to choose from. She also said the department plans taste tests with local farmers, will pursue Department of Agriculture equipment and local-food grants, and expects to reduce sugar and sodium on next year’s school menus.
The board voted to approve Darlene’s out-of-state travel to the Washington School Nutrition Association conference in Spokane in July; Darlene said she will report back on lessons and updated guidelines learned at the conference.
