Portage County awaits Marathon County sign-off on waste swap agreement; special meeting likely

Portage County staff told the Solid Waste group that a swap agreement with Marathon County Solid Waste and Waste Management is nearly finalized and could be in place by July 1 if Marathon County signs off.
Site coordinator Amanda said the county has been negotiating the new agreement for about two years and that the only outstanding item is Marathon County’s final approval. She said staff hopes to have the agreement in place July 1 and, if so, would call a special meeting before the County Board’s June 17 session to approve it administratively.
Amanda said the swap reduces truck travel and coordinates where Portage County’s waste and contracted loads are delivered. She asked the board to be prepared to hold a short special meeting if Marathon County’s approval arrives in time.
Board members discussed possible dates for a special meeting; staff proposed a short noon meeting the week before June 17 and asked members for solid commitments so the board would have at least five members present. No formal vote was taken on the agreement at the meeting.
No legal agreement was signed at the meeting; staff will schedule a special meeting if Marathon County Solid Waste gives final approval.
