Board approves edits to library recording-studio user agreement; raises supervision age to 18

The South Burlington Library Board of Trustees approved edits May 30 to the library’s recording-studio user agreement that change supervision requirements for studio users under a specified age.

Under the approved edits, the board clarified that patrons under age 16 require a parent or responsible adult’s signature on the recording-studio user agreement and that a responsible adult must be present with 16-year-old patrons when using the studio. Another change raises the age at which studios may require supervision to 18 in certain cases; the language approved replaces prior references to 16 with 18 in the policy draft.

Library staff explained the changes as part of routine policy updates and requested clearer terminology for references to “child” and “youth,” saying the user agreement should reference a defined age class earlier in the patron-code or user-section to avoid inconsistent usage later in the document. Trustees discussed that the board will approve the edits with a clarifying edit to ensure the defined age categories appear before the studio rules.

The motion to approve the edits (as edited in the meeting to change wording and confirm age references) was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes.

The board indicated staff will publish the updated user agreement and incorporate the clarified age definitions in the patron code or user policies so the studio rules reference a single, defined age classification.
