Bradley County commission committee members discussed whether the county needs a written policy for naming county-owned assets, including buildings, sports fields and other facilities, and concluded no formal policy would be adopted at the meeting.
Committee members said both the mayor’s office and the county commission have previously named assets and that naming has sometimes involved consultation with school boards or other partners. Examples mentioned during the discussion included incorporation of a suggested name into an existing park name and school buildings that were named following coordination with school officials. Members noted the naming of assets has been rare and that in some cases officials have chosen to coordinate naming to preserve the element of surprise for honorees; the meeting record cautioned that such coordination can raise public meetings (sunshine law) considerations.
No motion was made to create a formal naming policy during the committee meeting. Committee members said they believe either the mayor or the commission may proceed with a naming request and that, historically, both routes have been used. The transcript does not show any new resolution or deadline to change existing practice.
