The resolution (motion by Aoki, seconded by Dubek) was supported by several supervisors who said the employee, identified in the motion as Jane, deserved compensation for extra duties. Supervisor Rockman flagged language in county ordinance 3.11.0.83 (f)(1) and asked whether the ordinance essentially denies pay for acting duties that last fewer than 30 days; counsel and the HR director acknowledged that reading and said the stated standard in the ordinance appears to be consistent with that interpretation.
Several supervisors urged the Human Resources Committee or Executive Operations to review the ordinance wording and consider changes so employees filling higher‑level duties are not unpaid for short interim periods. Supervisor Ware and Supervisor Eggleston said the board should revisit the ordinance to address perceived fairness concerns, recalling earlier instances when elected officials or staff covered additional duties without extra pay.
After discussion the board voted to approve the one‑time step‑up pay for the administrative assistant; members said approving this case does not preclude later ordinance review.
