At the June 2 work session, the McCombs School District board reviewed a set of proposed revisions to the student handbook and curriculum documents and asked staff to tighten language and improve formatting before final adoption.
Trustees asked staff to standardize capitalization and the table of contents numbering so policies and handbook sections can be located by number. One trustee said items that affect student access — including student fees and the hardship waiver — should be emphasized so parents understand that students “shall not be denied access” because of inability to pay.
Board members also urged clearer language around vaping and tobacco. The handbook’s vaping-device definition currently references nicotine and “other chemicals”; a trustee asked that the definition explicitly include THC given current usage trends. “Considering our current climate with vaping, we need to add that,” a board member said.
On curriculum, staff presented a minor course-name change. The district will rename one Year 1 class and consolidate materials under a new information technology cohort, which staff said aligns the course with DMACC’s information technology program.
Trustees discussed formatting choices for emphasis (bolding versus color), noting printing costs if color is used. They also asked that final edits include numbered sections and page numbering to make the handbook easier for parents and staff to navigate.
No final adoption vote was recorded; staff said they will incorporate the requested edits and return a revised package for the board’s review.
