Lowell license commissioners approve series of summer special-event permits and one-day alcohol licenses

The Lowell License Commission on June 12 approved special-event permits and one-day alcohol licenses for multiple summer gatherings, including youth-led church services, neighborhood festivals and the Lowell Summer Music Series.

The approvals cover amplified outdoor public entertainment and, in some cases, one‑day licenses to sell malt beverages and wine for events at locations including Fifth Street Baptist Church (28 West Fifth Street), Lowell Community Health Center (161 Jackson Street), Brewed Awakening (61 Market Street), Sampas Pavilion (160 Pawtucket Boulevard), Temple grounds (45 Bernier Street), the Portuguese American Lowell Youth Center (739 Central Street), UMass Lowell’s Belgard Boathouse (500 Pawtucket Boulevard) and Boarding House Park (40 French Street).

“The annual health center barbecue for all of our employees as part of National Health Center Week,” Linda Chan Flynn, of Lowell Community Health Center, told the commission, adding that the event would have music alongside a barbecue. “So we have requested to have some music playing, to go alongside the barbecue.”

Why it matters: the permits authorize amplified music and, in several cases, limited alcohol sales at neighborhood venues during peak summer weekends, enabling community festivals, longstanding cultural gatherings and the city’s summer concert series to proceed with municipal approval.
