The Town of Babylon Zoning Board of Appeals approved amended applications to permit propane-exchange cabinets at two retail locations: Costello’s Ace Hardware in West Babylon (application 25080) and a Copiague location (application 25081). The board approved both applications for one-year periods subject to fire-marshal approval and standard safety provisions.
Representatives from Paraco Gas and Costello’s described the installations as propane-exchange cabinets (cylinder exchange cages) with bollards and compliance with NFPA 58 standards. At the West Babylon store the applicant said the cabinet would be set to the right of the entrance about 20–21 feet from the door, with the sidewalk remaining unobstructed; the Copiague site will have two larger 54-tank cages on the west front corner of the building.
Board members confirmed minimum clearance requirements (minimum 10 feet from entrances) and asked applicants to be mindful of parking-lot sweeping and neighborhood impacts. The fire marshal had provided a report with no objections; the board approved both amended applications by voice vote with the condition that final placement and installation meet the fire marshal’s requirements.
