Commission approves rear yard fence at 420 Holmes Avenue; driveway gate to receive final staff approval

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission approved a new rear-yard fence at 420 Holmes Avenue that will match existing scalloped wood fencing on the property and granted conceptual approval for an automatic driveway gate, subject to final design approval by staff.

City preservation planner Katie Stamps presented plans showing the new fence would run along the right-side property line to fully enclose the backyard and would match on-site material, color and the existing scalloped profile. The existing fence varies between 6 and 7 feet in height due to the scalloped profile; staff noted the proposed fence would thus exceed the guideline’s 6-foot recommendation but would match existing fabric on the property.

Stamps recommended the commission grant conceptual approval for the electric driveway gate and allow the applicant and staff to finalize gate details outside the full meeting. “I recommended tonight that we maybe go for conceptual approval for the automatic driveway gate, and if y’all are amenable to letting them consult with me on getting the final approval for the design itself, that we would coordinate that between myself and the applicant,” Stamps said.

Commissioners asked that the final gate design be compatible and noted a preference for a more solid gate option to reduce noise and sight lines for a resident’s dog; one commissioner asked staff to confirm that the gate finish match the foundation paint color as proposed. After a short public-comment period, the commission approved the fence as submitted and adopted the staff-delegation approach for gate design.

The commission’s motion authorized staff to approve the final gate design after review; staff will issue a written COA documenting the approved fence and the gate-design approval process.
