HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission approved modifications to a detached outbuilding at 401 White Street, permitting enclosure of the front elevation and installation of garage-style doors, after staff determined the changes will not be visible from public streets.
Stamps told commissioners the outbuilding is a modified structure at the rear of a contributing ca. 1909 property in the Twickenham historic district. The Macon—transcript records Madison—County tax assessor and the Twickenham nomination mention a rear single-story outbuilding historically associated with the property, but staff noted the current shed-roof form has been altered from the earlier description and may have been substantially modified.
Because the structure sits well back from public right-of-way and the proposed changes maintain the existing footprint and height, staff recommended approval. “The modifications will not be visible from any street view and maintain the existing footprint and height of the structure,” Stamps said.
The homeowners’ representative requested the enclosed elevation’s siding match the primary house and indicated a preference to use board-and-batten to match nearby historic outbuildings; the planner clarified that the siding approach should be consistent with remaining historic materials on site.
After a short public-comment period with no speakers, the commission voted to approve the application as submitted. The approval was recorded by voice vote and staff will include the work under a certificate of appropriateness and verify materials during permit review.
