HRC adopts Disability Pride Month resolution, asks city manager to review municipal accessibility

The Worcester Human Rights Commission unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing Disability Pride Month during its July 26 meeting and asked the city manager to review municipal policies, programs and facilities to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and accessibility best practices.
Commissioner Robert Bellotta presented the resolution; he noted the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and urged that the city review accessibility in transportation, housing, public accommodations and other services. The resolution affirms the HRC’s commitment to uplift disabled voices and the intersectional challenges faced by disabled people who are also members of other historically marginalized groups.
The motion passed on a roll-call vote with every present commissioner voting “Aye.” Commissioners asked staff to forward the resolution to the city manager’s office for follow-up and suggested that the city examine municipal policies for alignment with ADA obligations.
Attribution: Commissioner Robert Bellotta read the resolution language and referenced the ADA’s protections and historic advocacy; the chair and Pat Lafore coordinated the procedural motion to send the resolution on to the city manager.
