Miami Gardens council renames NW 12th Avenue 'Links Incorporated Way' after public hearing

On June 11, 2025, the Miami Gardens City Council voted unanimously 6-0 to adopt a resolution renaming Northwest Twelfth Avenue between Northwest 180th Drive and Northwest 180th Terrace as Links Incorporated Way.
Councilman Reggie Leon sponsored the resolution and asked the council to authorize the city manager to change street signage. The council held a public hearing and heard statements from representatives of local Links Incorporated chapters and a recorded message from U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson.
In a recorded statement, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson said the Links have been a long-serving volunteer organization and voiced support for the street naming: “The Links incorporated to me is the most elite organization for prominent women. For 70 years, these women have helped black youth become successful citizens,” she said.
Local chapter leaders described long-standing programs in Miami Gardens and the county, including voter-registration drives, scholarship fundraisers, health and wellness events and youth mentoring. Sabrina Thomas Knight, president of the Greater Miami chapter, said her chapter was founded Nov. 5, 1955, and outlined work with Florida Memorial University and community health programs. Theresa Brown, president of the Dade County chapter, described a scholarship endowment and volunteer programs that have supported Miami Gardens students.
The council recorded yes votes from Councilman Leon, Councilwoman Powell, Councilwoman Julian, Vice Mayor Robert Stevens, Councilwoman Baskin and Mayor Harris. The motion passed 6-0. Council members noted the renaming will create a visible, long-term recognition of the organization’s contributions to the city.
