The Somers Central School District used its June 10 board meeting to honor 22 retiring staff members across district buildings, recognizing decades of service in classrooms, offices, cafeterias and facilities.
High school principal Pete Rodriguez and other building leaders called retirees by name and described their roles and contributions. Among the high school retirees recognized were Amy Durham (campus monitor since 2007), Mary Campbell (teaching assistant; district service began as a substitute in 2008), Terry Kaminski (counseling center secretary), and Laura Viglianti (math teacher, district service since 2001). The district also acknowledged a long list of middle- and elementary-school retirees—including Gina Bridal, Monica Manko, Joanne Giudici, Kim Gordon, Phyllis Levesque, Gina Sullivan, Kathleen Wright, John Bedini, Brenda DeBellas, Carmela Harris, Joanne Yersa, Helen and Manuela (building support staff), Jimmy (night custodian) and others—each credited for years of steady service and specific contributions to students and colleagues.
Chris McCartney, the district director of facilities, spoke to custodial staff service and singled out Jimmy for 26 years with the night custodial team. Food-service director Jill Weissman read remarks for Pam Lacko, who was unable to attend; her remarks noted 28 years of service in food services.
Speakers emphasized personal anecdotes as well as professional accomplishments: retired staff were praised for daily reliability, mentorship of students, and behind-the-scenes work that kept buildings running. Several speakers and board members urged the community to join in wishing retirees a restful retirement and thanked them for contributions to student learning and school culture.
The board’s recognitions were part of a broader end-of-year celebration that also highlighted student awards and community partnerships. No board action was required to honor retirees; the segment was presentation-only.
