Yakima County commissioners unanimously back letter urging congressional protection for prevention funding

Lindy said prevention has been a consistent priority for the board while discussing opioid settlement funds and mental-health sales tax revenues. “It has been a consensus of this board that prevention is a priority,” Lindy said. Commissioner McKinney and Commissioner Curtis both voiced support for the letter.
Commissioner McKinney moved to sign the letter as presented; Commissioner Curtis seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
Julie Lawrence, clerk of the board, was directed to prepare the letter for the commissioners’ signatures and to send it to the congressional delegation as agreed.
The letter emphasizes protecting funding specifically for evidence-based prevention programs rather than only treatment-focused spending; the board did not alter the letter’s language during the meeting.
