Coconut Creek commission advances charter amendments; mayor stresses changes go to voters

The Coconut Creek City Commission on June 12 read an ordinance adopting proposed amendments to the city charter recommended by the Charter Review Board and approved moving the amendments forward for public consideration.
Ordinance 2025-18, as read into the record, accepts revisions recommended by the Charter Review Board to multiple charter provisions including rules of construction, commission powers and duties, financial procedures and initiative, referendum and recall provisions. The ordinance specifies that amendments would take effect only if a majority of electors voting in the November election approve them; the city clerk will present the ballot form accordingly.
Mayor Railey emphasized the commission’s limited role at this stage. “This has been portrayed as something that we’re doing. Let’s be crystal clear here,” the mayor said, noting the review board made recommendations that the commission is mandated by law to forward to voters and that “this will be on a referendum on the November 2026 ballot.” The mayor asked staff to open a public hearing; no members of the public spoke on the item.
The ordinance reading was approved by roll-call vote. City staff confirmed that if the voters approve, the charter amendments would be codified in the city charter as provided in the ordinance text.
