BPAC approves study and possible phase extension to connect Acequia Trail to Airport Road if funds available

Staff reported on a requested extension of the Acequia Trail project termini from San Felipe Road to Airport Road to close a roughly quarter-mile gap and improve safety for riders who currently must use a roadway lacking sidewalks.
City staff and the consultant explained that adding the extension would require surveying and environmental documentation for the additional segment; because project funding agreements have limits on amendments, staff proposed creating a separate Phase B scope for the San Felipe-to-Airport Road segment so surveying and environmental work would be cleanly scoped and funded if money is available. The proposed trail on San Felipe would likely be located on the east side of the road within existing right-of-way.
BPAC moved to add the extension as a Phase B contingent on funding availability; the motion passed on roll call. Staff and the consultant will finalize the separate Phase B scope, survey work and cost estimate, then seek authorization/funding to proceed. Committee members emphasized the safety benefit of closing the quarter-mile gap to avoid riders using an unsheltered roadway with blind corners.
