City launches Santa Fe Forward general plan update; public open house set

Planning staff outlined a multi-year update to the Santa Fe general plan to 2050, including an assessment report, community engagement, scenario planning and a parallel land development code update. An open house and outreach program were announced for public involvement.
Heather Lamboy, director of the Planning and Land Use Department, presented the Santa Fe Forward general plan update and its community outreach program, saying the update is intended to be an "actionable plan" that guides priorities and ties to implementation funding.
The plan is a three-year program (staff said they hope to advance faster where possible) that includes an assessment report, scenario planning to test development patterns through 2050, an implementation and funding plan, and an updated participation program with Spanish-language materials. Lamboy said the assessment report (about 600 pages) will be posted on the project website and that tomorrow's open house at the Higher Education Center will initiate the vision-and-goals phase.
Lamboy listed several transportation and land-use findings relevant to committee interests: prioritizing multimodal street corridors, closing pedestrian and bicycle gaps (for example Arroyo Chamizo Trail and sidewalks on Cerrillos/Cerritas corridors), improving the transit network to serve off-peak and shift workers, and encouraging infill development to reduce car dependence. The update will be coordinated with the land development code rewrite (Phase 1 to be introduced June 25), and staff said draft materials and a public engagement map are available at santafeforward.org.
The director said the project team includes WSP USA, Leland Consulting Group, and Design Workshop, and noted a community partners microgrant program to reach diverse constituencies. Lamboy offered to return to the committee with targeted chapter reviews and to coordinate with BPAC and the technical subcommittee. Members asked how BPAC should formally participate; Lamboy recommended reviewing the transportation chapter online and returning written comments or hosting a committee-level briefing.
The committee agreed to route detailed review of the transportation chapter through the planning-policy subcommittee or technical-review subcommittee and requested staff provide the assessment report excerpts relevant to transportation. Lamboy said the assessment materials would be posted and that she would follow up with disposition reports for previous outreach.
