Skamania County updates: Western Federal Lands funding appears to enable full roadway stabilization; transfer-site scale vandalized

Skamania County staff reported May 20 that a project with Western Federal Lands appears close to providing sufficient funding to stabilize an entire roadway stretch and to continue pavement preservation work, pending final approvals.
Staff said the planning would allow the county to repair and stabilize the roadway stretch in a single campaign, reducing long-term community impact from repeated closures. That project still requires formal approval but staff indicated funding levels now look sufficient to proceed with the whole scope rather than a phased approach.
Public-works staff also described bridge and roadside work: crews have cleared brush around bridges to prepare for inspections and inspections have begun, noting that most bridges require inspection every other year while a few are inspected annually because of lower ratings.
The county closed a remote transfer site on short notice after vandals damaged the site’s weigh scale; staff said the closure prevented accurate invoicing and that repair work was expected to restore service the following week. Separately, staff reported an approximately $20,000 increase in costs related to an unplanned jail roof repair; work was underway and county staff were coordinating with the sheriff’s office.
Commissioners noted the meeting itself had been temporarily affected by a county internet outage and recessed while the county conducted portions of the meeting by phone; the outage has since been resolved. Several routine financial actions were approved earlier in the meeting, including voucher and payroll approvals recorded in the minutes.
