Pierce County proclaims May 2025 as Older Americans Month; officials highlight Aging and Disability Resources services

The Pierce County Council and County Executive on May 27 proclaimed May 2025 as Older Americans Month, citing the national Administration for Community Living observance and the local work of Pierce County Aging and Disability Resources (ADR).
Councilmember Yambe read the proclamation noting the national observance since 1963 and that “adults 60 and older make up nearly 21% of Pierce County.” Dr. Sarah Thompson, board chair of the Aging and Disability Resource Advisory Board, spoke in support: “I am 1 of those older adults, and I’ve been on the advisory board for the ADR for about 5 years or so, I’m the president right now,” she said, thanking ADR staff and volunteers for their work.
Councilmembers from across the dais praised ADR’s services. Councilmember Denson said ADR’s case management, resource fairs and outreach are valuable, and urged residents to call ADR for assistance. A staff phone number listed during the session was (253) 798‑4600 for county programs and services. Councilmember Herrera and others emphasized listening to and respecting older residents, and several councilmembers described referring constituents to ADR for help with long-term care planning or services.
The proclamation text and speakers highlighted ADR’s role advising the county and assisting older adults and people with disabilities to remain healthy and safe in their homes. Councilmembers announced outreach events and district meetings where ADR would provide information tables; Councilmember Denson noted an in‑district meeting on Fox Island on June 2 where ADR will have an information table.
