Pierce County proclaims June 2025 as Ride Transit Month; Pierce Transit highlights fare-free day

The Pierce County Council and County Executive on May 27 proclaimed June 2025 as Ride Transit Month, recognizing public transportation’s role in connecting residents to work, education, healthcare and community services.
“As a community, we recognize this month’s theme — transit empowers us — and the vital role public transportation plays in connecting communities,” the proclamation text states. The proclamation highlights regional partners including Pierce Transit, Sound Transit and the ORCA regional payment card.
Amy Cleveland, chief administrative officer of Pierce Transit, spoke to the council and said, “It’s an honor to be here this afternoon and just wanna say thank you so much for supporting transit. We’re commemorating 45 years of public transit service. And in celebration of that, June 1 is fare free day, so just a reminder to get out and ride the bus on that day.”
An event organizer representing Downtown on the Go encouraged councilmembers and residents to try transit and attend community events such as a transit trivia night hosted by Pierce Transit, Ride Together Pierce and Downtown on the Go. Councilmembers Yambe, Ayala and Cooper offered remarks thanking transit operators and urging residents to experience local routes firsthand.
The proclamation also notes county transit assets including the Stream Community line connecting Spanaway and the Tacoma Dome Station and the regional ORCA card. The council asked that community members be encouraged to ride transit during June to support safer, more connected and sustainable communities.
