24 Niagara Falls students earn Seal of Biliteracy; Buffalo Bills Foundation donates $100,000 to district pantry program

The Niagara Falls City School District on June 12 celebrated 24 Niagara Falls High School students who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, recognizing proficiency in English and at least one other language.

Superintendent Mark Lohrey and language program coordinators introduced the students and described the program’s growth: the district increased its seal recipients from single‑digit cohorts in prior years to 24 this year. Meredith Anthony, identified by district staff as a coordinator of the program, and world language teachers were acknowledged for leading the effort; the board presented each student with a medal and certificate.

Also during the program portion of the meeting the board presented four Golden Apple awards to school and community groups for work on school beautification, student support and community partnerships. Mark Lohrey highlighted a mural and courtyard work at Harry F. Abbott School and thanked partners who helped with school improvements.

Separately, representatives of the Buffalo Bills Foundation told the board the foundation would donate $100,000 to FeedMore in the name of the Niagara Falls City School District to support a food pantry and backpack program. A Buffalo Bills representative said, “On behalf of the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Bills Foundation, we are so honored to receive this award, and we are so honored to partner with the Niagara Falls City School District.” The foundation’s representatives credited district staff for helping connect the team to students and facilitating events.

The awards and donations were ceremonial recognitions and presentations; no additional district funding was announced by the board at the meeting.
