Board tables Micah's Promise memorandum of understanding, plans site visits and possible special meeting

The Harris County Board of Education voted on June 12 to remove a proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Micah's Promise from the agenda and table formal action so the district can gather more information.
Superintendent Dr. Finney summarized the MOU and said Micah's Promise offers shelter and counseling and requested the district provide educational services for 12‑ to 17‑year‑old students who have been engaged in trafficking. Dr. Finney recommended tabling the item to allow district staff to visit the Micah's Promise facility, review security and staffing, and determine what educational services the district could provide.
A motion was made to amend the agenda to remove item K‑5 (the Micah's Promise MOU); the motion was seconded and passed with the board voting "all in favor." Board members urged the administration to act quickly because of timing concerns about students arriving before the next school year. One board member asked that the district be "expeditious" in gathering information so any needed services could start in time for the school year.
Dr. Finney said Micah's Promise would require visitors to sign a nondisclosure agreement for site visits and that he would contact Micah's Promise to arrange visits. The board discussed holding a special called meeting after the next committee meeting in July if district staff determine a vote is necessary and have the information prepared.
No vote on the MOU occurred; the board removed the item from the current agenda and directed the superintendent to gather information and report back.
