County reports HVAC collapse at Quincy District Court; temporary cooling and relocation plans underway

Norfolk County Director John Cronin told commissioners on June 11 that Quincy District Court is experiencing major HVAC failures and that the Commonwealth and county are planning temporary cooling while pursuing a relocation.
Cronin said the building’s HVAC system has effectively collapsed and that staff found four compressors originally but now only one remains operable. He said the state has arranged temporary cooling units and a generator to keep the building habitable through the summer; the temporary equipment will likely be removed around Labor Day and reinstalled the next summer if needed.
Cronin told commissioners the Commonwealth has signed a lease to relocate Quincy District Court occupants to a site known as the Patriot Ledger Building and that occupants are expected to begin vacating the Quincy site around Labor Day 2026. The county will continue to support the state’s response and keep the court operational in the near term with temporary cooling while longer-term relocation plans proceed.
Cronin said the county is coordinating operations so court business can continue during repair and relocation planning. No formal vote was required; the report was presented as part of the county director’s update.
