Madison County board approves 2025–29 capital plan, Hazle Green Middle project and multiple administrative items; hires new principal and PR director

The Madison County Board of Education on June 12 approved a slate of administrative and capital items, including the 2025–29 Madison County Schools Capital Plan, the Hazle Green Middle School construction project, the 2026–27 academic calendar and the district athletic handbook.

Superintendent Byrd presented the items and called for motions; board members moved, seconded and approved the proposals by voice vote with affirmative responses reported as “Aye.” The board also approved bid renewals, April financial statements and payment of bills, contracts for services and multiple personnel items and addenda.

Personnel approvals recorded at the meeting included the appointment of Tanya Smith as principal at Riverton Elementary School and Jessica Aguirre Cantrell as director of public relations. Byrd announced those hires after the board approved principal and assistant-principal probationary contracts and supplemental contracts. The new director’s start date was given as July 1.

The board approved the Hazle Green Middle School construction project and bid renewals as submitted. Earlier in the meeting trustees discussed facilities updates including progress at Spartan Intermediate School and athletic improvements (see separate coverage of construction and facilities updates).

Trustees recessed for an executive session to consider a personnel transfer; no public vote on that item was recorded in the meeting minutes presented at the session.
