Verona seeks federal TAP funding for two multiuse path projects; city council pledges local matches

City staff said the North Main Street multiuse path project would widen and repave an existing off-road connection from Behrend Drive to Cross Country Road, improving off-street access near Sugar Creek Elementary and Badger Ridge Middle School. The Wisconsin DOT share for that project would be $300,000 if awarded; the city's local match would be $75,000 (an 80/20 split).
Council also authorized a TAP application to pave a section of the Military Ridge State Trail from Old PB to 400 feet west of Wildcat Way to improve safety and connectivity to Downtown Verona, the senior center and Verona High School. Staff said the DOT share would be $563,625 and the local match $140,906.25 (80/20). The city noted it had also applied to other grant programs for overlapping improvements and was coordinating multiple funding opportunities.
Councilors asked clarifying questions about the scope on North Main Street (the proposal would widen an existing path to a multiuse standard) and the presence of retaining walls that could affect cost estimates. The council moved to approve resolutions of support for both TAP applications and to provide the local matches if the grants are awarded.
