Hopkinton approves gymnastics co-op with Medway for 2025–26 season

The Hopkinton School Committee voted June 12 to join an existing Medway-hosted gymnastics cooperative for the 2025–26 winter season.
Hopkinton athletic staff presented the proposal after surveying student interest. The presenter said about seven or eight rising ninth-graders indicated they are competitive gymnastics athletes, in addition to four or five current high-school athletes in ninth or 10th grade, creating a pool of participants that would support joining the Medway-hosted coop. The existing coop had previously been supported by three schools but faced low returning numbers this year; Hopkinton participation was presented as a way to sustain the program.
Under the arrangement, Medway will host practices at a facility in Ashland and provide a coach; facility rental costs are split among participating schools and were described as $2,400 for the season. The coop does not provide transportation to events, and committee members were told Hopkinton’s current budget can cover uniform and related costs. The presenter said it is possible Hopkinton could become the host in future years if local enrollment grows.
Committee members asked about insurance and historical arrangements. Presenters responded that insurance would be handled in a manner similar to other off-site athletic activities (for example, swim meets or hockey at external rinks) and noted Hopkinton had previously participated in a different coop with Westborough before that arrangement ended.
A motion to approve the high-school gymnastics coop for the 2025–26 season carried on a roll-call vote; the voting members present registered yes votes.
The committee’s action authorizes staff to participate in the Medway-hosted cooperative for the coming winter season; no new district-wide policy or long-term funding commitment was adopted at the meeting.
