Phoenix Office of Innovation highlights hackathons, chilled-water pilot, sensors and AR tools

Michael Hammett, director of the City of Phoenix Office of Innovation, told the Economic Development and Housing Subcommittee on June 12, 2025, that the office has focused its work on piloting technologies, strategic use of data and performance management since launching in 2021.
Hammett described the Innovate Phoenix challenge as a cornerstone program that has produced pilot projects on city priorities, including a smart-cities hackathon on accessibility, public spaces and transportation. “This is a cornerstone program of the office we launched in 2023,” Hammett said, noting the city has run five challenges and engaged a broad set of community participants.
