Provo staff outlines multiweek closures for Freedom Boulevard, University Avenue work

Provo City staff told the Transportation Mobility Advisory Committee that a major water-line installation and related stormwater repairs will close a segment of Freedom Boulevard for multi-night and multiweek operations this summer and that University Avenue work will begin in the fall.
Staff said the northern segment of Freedom Boulevard (near the north side of BYU stadium and the intermodal fields) has been closed since May 13 and is scheduled to reopen June 18. Two planned weekend closures will follow: a multi-night closure beginning the weekend of June 20 and a repeat closure the following weekend to complete infrastructure work; staff said temporary asphalt will be used and that the full repaving will follow. After the Freedom Festival period, staff said, the same Freedom Boulevard segment will be closed again until Aug. 22 to finish water-line and stormwater work.
City staff described detour routing during the closures: northbound traffic is expected to use Canyon Road as the logical detour, with southbound traffic using Freedom Boulevard segments where appropriate. Staff cautioned that lane restrictions and local detours will be in place and urged users to consult the city's project maps and app.
Regarding University Avenue, staff said the University Avenue project will begin Oct. 1 and that lane-restriction work may start as early as Nov. 1. The city emphasized these construction efforts are tied to a new culinary water treatment plant and the installation of a large-diameter pipe across the university corridor.
The city also noted a central place for live project information: Joseph Gandy, who manages the department's mapping and communications, has developed a website and mobile app that shows active projects, closures and anticipated opening dates. Staff encouraged committee members and residents to consult that resource for up-to-date routing and schedules.
