Kane County approves budget transfer to create crisis collaboration liaison to train police on mental-health crisis response

The Kane County Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Thursday approved a budget transfer from the health department to the state’s attorney’s office to create a crisis collaboration liaison position that will train police departments, social workers and others on recognizing and responding to mental‑health crises.
State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser introduced the budget adjustment as a request to create the new position and said it will be filled by a recently retired Elgin Police lieutenant, Tony Regado, who helped create Elgin’s crisis services unit. “He is very familiar with crisis intervention training along with how to train police departments, social workers, and everyone on how to recognize these signs,” Mosser said.
Mosser said the liaison will work with the county’s collaborative diversion program to reach every police department within the county. The funds come from the King County Health Department via a budget transfer; Mosser said her “goal is to continue to sustain [the position] with grants.”
Committee member Linda Linder moved the resolution and was seconded by Mister Greipe; roll call votes were all in favor and the measure will proceed to the county finance office for final processing.
No additional funding from the county general fund was requested at the meeting; Mosser said the position’s long‑term funding strategy includes continuing grant support.
