Commission approves additional payment to complete Wheeler Road beautification after invoice revision

Commission staff said the commission previously approved a 50% contribution of $16,730 toward the project on March 4; after work proceeded the contractor submitted a final invoice for $57,310 to remove damaged trees, grind and remove stumps, backfill with topsoil, replant 31 willow oaks and install 5,000 square feet of new sod, plus sprinkler head replacements. The contractor requested the city’s 50% share of the final invoice, which would raise the city’s contribution to $28,655. Staff asked the committee to approve an extra $11,925 to complete the payment.
Attorney Turner Plunkett told commissioners the original approval obligated the city for the earlier, smaller amount but did not legally obligate the county to the later, higher invoice; he said the commission was not legally required to pay the extra amount but could choose to assist to complete the corridor work. Several commissioners spoke in favor of affirming the public–private partnership; Commissioner Garrett and Commissioner Smith Rice praised Mr. Storey’s contributions to area entrances. The commission voted to approve the additional payment; the motion carried unanimously.
