Sawyer County board approves up to $2,825,000 borrowing to upgrade emergency radio system

Members of the Sawyer County board voted to authorize borrowing of up to $2,825,000 to expand and upgrade the county's emergency services radio tower system, saying the work will improve responder safety.
The board approved an initial resolution authorizing the borrowing and the eventual sale of general obligation promissory notes at a regular meeting. "This is the actual resolution then authorizing the borrowing of $2,825,000 for the purposes of expanding and beefing up, getting new equipment for our emergency services radio tower system to make our staff safer as they're responding to calls and everything there," said Mike Markren, finance staff, describing the purpose of the financing.
The resolution authorizes the debt issue; board members will return in July to receive bids for the note sale and, if they approve, the county plans to settle the borrowing in mid-July. The county had previously authorized the project and funding approach; this action is the formal step to permit the debt issuance.
Board members did not amend the amount at the meeting. The motion to approve the initial resolution was made by Mark Helwig and seconded by Jeff Haney; the motion carried without recorded roll-call opposition.
The finance staff said the borrowing will fund tower equipment and related improvements; staff will present bid results and a final approval resolution in July.
