The Town of Miami Lakes Senior Advisory Committee approved a preliminary "need" budget of $30,500 and a "wish" budget of $38,500 for fiscal year 2025–26, and set a $25 per-person funding cap for an upcoming summer movie outing.
The committee voted to allocate the $30,500 need total across line items staff presented: $500 for community forums; $12,000 for meet-and-greet/bingo events; $8,000 for senior field trips; and $10,000 for senior social/theme parties. The group later approved a wish list that would raise the total to $38,500 if additional funds are available.
Chair Nancy (committee chair) led the budget discussion and asked members to confirm priority line items and to use the committee rules workshop to resolve procedural questions about absences and event approvals. Rosario (staff member) walked the committee through the worksheet that separates “need” (what the committee plans to spend assuming current allocations) from “wish” (extra funding requested).
Committee members debated line-item changes during a line-by-line review. Members noted that some traditional program line items now show zero because the town or outside sponsors currently cover those activities; they moved funds between social programming and field trips to reflect rising costs for buses and theater tickets.
On the committee’s field trip schedule, members approved a motion to set the budget at $25 per attendee to cover entrance and a light food item (popcorn/hot dog), with an expected attendance range in past events of about 50–60 seniors. The motion passed with no recorded nays.
Committee members also discussed enforcement of the committee’s attendance rules. Chair Nancy reiterated that the committee follows the town’s adopted rules, which allow the chair discretion to classify absences and that members should notify the chair in advance when possible. No formal removal action was taken; the discussion served as guidance for members.
The committee approved the budget worksheet and the movie-ticket funding motion by voice vote. Members were reminded the town’s final budget is set in late September and that the committee’s allocations are preliminary requests subject to change and final council approval.
The meeting closed with administrative reminders: the committee rules workshop for all town committees, dates for upcoming bingos and field trips, and a request for members to continue recruiting sponsors and volunteers for events.
