At a June 20 meeting, the Columbus Historic Preservation Commission conducted a conceptual review of an application to demolish a two‑story rear porch and construct a one‑story sunroom at 1148 Veil Avenue. Staff noted that the proposal was conceptual and requested a demolition plan and an existing condition site plan showing what would be removed.
Steve Hirt of Urban Order Architecture, the applicant's designer, said the project would remove the porch and build a sunroom beyond the existing rear wall, retain certain existing openings, and add a small hip roof as part of the new one‑story addition. "We are just removing the porch ... and then we're going to add the sunroom past that," Hirt said, describing the intent to keep the primary rear facade as an exterior wall and create a usable interior space where the second‑floor porch is currently underused and deteriorated.
Commissioners told the applicant the submission should include sections, clear notation of which elements are historic and which are new, and construction details illustrating that alterations are reversible where possible. No formal action was taken; the commission offered design feedback the applicant can use to prepare a formal COA application with required technical drawings.
